Wheelchair Drive Unit (WDU) User Manual - Page 1 - Page 2
Presented for information only, may differ from the manual that comes with the unit.

Thank you for buying your Wheelchair Drive Unit from Sinclair Research Ltd.

1.0 Fitting Instructions - Please read through before starting to fit the WDU. The battery supplied with your WDU is charged but will benefit from a 6 hour booster charge – see section 3.0.

1.1 Tools required: An ‘L' shaped wrench (Allen key) is provided to fasten the clamp bolts and a ruler is printed along the back of this manual.

1.2 Please check the contents against those shown in Figure A. If any parts are missing please contact your supplier.

Figure A

1.3 The WDU will fit most large or small wheeled wheelchairs with either a rigid or a folding frame. Referring to Figure B, slacken off the wing nuts and fully extend the telescopic arms.

Figure B

1.4 Referring to Figure C and D, lightly fasten the clamps to a vertical part of the frame with the supplied nuts and bolts using the 'L' shaped wrench. If the frame tube is too narrow for the clamp to be tightened securely then insert either one of the spacers.

Figure C

1.5 Referring to Figure D and using the printed ruler, slide the clamps up or down the frame until the top of the clamps is about 25 cm (10") from ground level (anywhere between 20 cm (8") and 30 cm (12") is okay). Both clamps must be at the same height and aligned with each other. When the clamps are correctly positioned, tighten them up securely.

Figure D

1.6 The drive unit now needs to be maneuvered so that when it sits on the ground the moulded groove in the motor case is vertical, as shown in Figure E, and the distance from the frame to the case is equal on both sides, as shown in Figure F. When the set up is correct tighten up both wing nuts securely.

1.7 Referring to Figure G, position the lifting strap loop over either handlebar and press the lifter down so that it makes a diamond shape in the strap. Then, with the patient in the chair, adjust the strap length with the adjuster until the drive wheel is lifted off the ground. The gap under the drive unit tire should be about 6 mm (1/4").

Figure G

1.8 Raising the lifter up as shown in Figure H drops the drive wheel down onto the ground.

Fugure H

1.9 Referring to Figure J, snap the switch onto the handlebar opposite the lifting strap. On some wheelchairs it may be necessary to slide the handle grip slightly along the tube to create the necessary space. The switch has one ‘On' position and two ‘Safe' positions (see Figure K).

Figure J

NOTE THAT IN THE NEXT STEP THE WDU WILL BE CONNECTED TO THE BATTERY. BE CAREFUL NOT TO DEPRESS THE TRIGGER SWITCH ACCIDENTALLY. MAKE SURE THE TRIGGER IS IN A ‘SAFE' POSITION (SEE FIGURE K).

Figure K

1.10 Referring to Figure L, insert the battery into the battery bag and connect the battery cable with the positive marked connector fitting onto the red battery terminal.

Figure L

1.11 Referring to Figure M, strap the battery bag to an horizontal frame piece and then wrap the webbing loop over a frame piece on the opposite side of the wheelchair. Using the webbing, the battery bag can be pulled clear of the wheelchair road wheels.

Figure M

1.12 The Wheelchair Drive Unit is now ready for use and should look similar to the unit in Figure N. Please read the rest of these instructions before use.
