2.0 Using the WDU (Please read before first use) Turn the trigger into its ‘On' position and drop the wheel onto the ground with the lifter. Depress the trigger and start pushing the wheelchair. The WDU will begin assisting after about one second.
Releasing the trigger cuts power immediately.
When WDU assistance is not required raise the wheel off the ground by pressing the lifter down. This will protect the drive wheel from premature wear. To reverse the wheelchair it is easiest to lift the drive wheel off the ground via the lifting strap. Similarly, when mounting kerbs in reverse, the WDU may be raised over the kerb via the lifting strap as shown in Figure O (do not use the cables to raise the drive unit).

Most folding wheelchairs can still be folded without removing the WDU as shown in Figure P.
 Figure P
However to temporarily remove the WDU from the wheelchair, park the trigger in its ‘safe' position and remove the battery bag, lifter strap and switch. Then tilt the wheelchair to the left or right so that the WDU unit hangs vertically down below the rear wheels as shown in Figure Q. The arms may now be withdrawn from the clamps and the drive unit removed. Refitting is the reverse of removal.

3.0 Charging Instructions The battery is supplied charged but will benefit from an initial 6 hour booster charge. Charging can be carried out whilst the battery is in the battery bag, on or off the wheelchair. 3.1 Connect the battery to the WDU if it has been disconnected. 3.2 Remove the rubber bung and insert the charger plug into the WDU charger socket as shown in Figure R.
 Figure R
3.3 Plug charger into mains.
3.4 Charging will take 12 to 14 hours for a fully discharged battery. Avoid leaving the charger connected for over 24 hrs as you could shorten battery life. If in doubt, charge overnight.
3.5 The charger gets quite warm during charging - this is normal.
Always connect the charger to the WDU first, and then plug into the mains. When charging is complete, unplug the charger from the mains first and then from the battery.
4.0 Battery Care
4.1 Whenever possible the battery should be recharged on the day of use.
4.2 If the unit is not used for extended periods, the battery should be charged overnight every 3 months.
4.3 Only use the charger supplied with the WDU. Never use a car battery charger.
4.4 Never place the battery in a sealed container when charging.
4.5 Never short circuit the battery or charger socket.
4.6 Never place/store the battery near a radiator/fire etc.
4.7 To store the battery, disconnect it from the WDU, insulate the battery terminals and keep it in a place that is dry and cool. Ambient temperature for storage should be in the range -20 C to 40 C (-4 F to 104 F).
4.8 Useful Battery Voltages - All readings taken 30 minutes after unplugging charger/using the WDU.
Fully Charged: 12.9 - 13.9 volts d.c.
Moderate Charge: 12.0 - 12.5 volts d.c.
Discharged: less than 11.5 volts d.c.
Note: The WDU is supplied with a charged battery but will benefit from an initial 6 hour booster charge (see previous section).

5.0 Problem Solving
5.1 My WDU cuts out.
This is a safety device that protects the motor. If your unit is tripping frequently try to increase your speed (see section 6.2 below).
5.2 My WDU motor will not turn.
Check the battery connection. Is the battery charged? Has the unit overheated (see section 6.2 below)? Is an obstruction clogging the drive wheel?
5.3 My range seems to be low.
Low speeds drain the battery. If it is not possible to increase your walking speed then you may wish to purchase a second battery to extend your range. Inflating tires to their maximum recommended pressure can dramatically increase range and make pushing much easier.
5.4 The lifting strap needs to be readjusted, especially after a heavy person sits in the wheelchair – see section 1.7.
6.0 Maintenance and Safety
6.1 To wipe the unit clean use a damp cloth with no detergent.
6.2 A cut out is fitted to the WDU to protect the motor. If the unit suddenly loses power during a slow climb, it will reset itself once it has cooled down. If smoke is ever seen or smelled coming from the motor unit, disconnect the battery and let the unit cool down for twenty minutes before reusing.
6.3 When the unit is removed from the wheelchair, or if the fitted unit is left unattended for long periods of time, always disconnect the battery.
6.4 Never insert anything other than the charger plug into the charger socket. Doing so can cause a short circuit.
6.5 In the highly unlikely event of the WDU not switching off when the trigger is released lift the drive wheel off the ground by pulling up the lifting strap and then disconnect the battery.
